July is all about self-control July 2, 2008

Sometimes we think it’s all about us. Everywhere we look there are self-help books and songs telling us to look inside ourselves for the right answers. It’s easy to think that it IS all about us when there’s so much pointing us to think only about ourselves, huh? But you know what? It’s not about us. We have to think of our neighbors. Not just the people who live next door to you, but everyone around you. In fact, Jesus commanded us to do just that. Love your neighbor as yourself. You would think this would be easy considering how much we tend to love ourselves! Well, as Christians, we most certainly fail at this particular commandment. How can we fix that? Let’s learn all about self-control this month. Self-control is choosing to do what you SHOULD do, not what you want to do. I can tell you, kids, that self-control is an important virtue for kids and grown-ups. I am looking forward to learning about this virtue right along with you in July.

U 1st Challenge June 7, 2008

Filed under: June 2008, Parenting — Don Brown @ 12:14 pm

Dear Parents and Kids,

Western Wake Crisis Center is in desperate need of food donations. I want to challenge the kids in 252 Basics to put others first by bringing in one canned food item to church tomorrow and/or next Sunday. You can bring in as much as you’d like, but the challenge is for 1 can only. What a simple way to put others first!

There will be a box for donations set up in class. I thank you in advance for the donations!

In His Service,
Kimberly Fulcher

No, not YOU first, U 1st! May 23, 2008

June’s virtue is humility-putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. Humility is also considered to be the opposite of pride. Jesus showed the ultimate act of humility by allowing Himself to be nailed to a cross to take on the sins of the world. Did He deserve to die that way? He put others first in the greatest way. This virtue is a hard one, and we as teachers will work hard to make the 252 kids understand it. This month we will be putting U 1st–NO, not YOU FIRST! We will put OTHERS first, which is exactly what Jesus did throughout his whole life. Look for U 1st! cards throughout the month of June. Don’t throw them away. Think about ways you can swallow your pride and put others first.

Family Devotion Now Downloadable! May 9, 2008

We are now making God Time & Refrigerator Cards down loadable for your family.
This is a great resource for you if you have been struggling with what to do for a family devotion time.

These two resources synchronize with your K-5th grade child’s current weekly lesson in 252 Basics.
Also, they include a definition of the monthly virtue, the previous week’s Bible story and verse, and four days of family daily devotions.

So, maybe your child didn’t make it home Sunday with these two items, you can download and print them at your convenience.

Give it a try.

Patience May 8, 2008

Kids, there’s an old song (from a rock band you have no business listening to) about patience from the late 1980s. One of the lines is “I’ve been walking the streets tonight, just trying to get it right.” Well, I’m not walking on any streets at night, but I sure am just trying to get it right. Sometimes it’s hard to get things right. One way to “get it right” is to have patience. Patience is waiting until later for something you want NOW. Kids, patience is such a hard virtue! I’ll be learning right along with you this month. Learning to wait for something makes that something so much more valuable. I hope you enjoy learning about patience with me this month.

Courage February 25, 2008

March’s virtue is courage–being brave enough to do what you should do even when you’re afraid. How appropriate that our virtue is courage when Easter is this month. Jesus showed the ultimate courage when He obediently died on the Cross for the sins of all mankind. Jesus had to have been afraid. Yet He knew He had to die for us and He did it!

This month, we will learn about other courageous people in the Bible, such as Esther and Daniel. We will learn how YOU can show courage by doing what God is telling you to do even if you’re afraid.
